Glen Cove: The Gatsby Coast, Reimagined

Step into the world of Long Island’s legendary Gold Coast, where the lavish lifestyle of the Gilded Age lives on—this time with vibrant, modern flair.

A Legacy of Opulence

In the early 20th century, industrial magnates like Charles Pratt, F.W. Woolworth, and J.P. Morgan erected grand waterfront estates in Glen Cove—earning it the moniker “Gatsby Coast”. Their stately homes, often inspired by European styles, symbolized their wealth and mirrored the glamour Fitzgerald immortalized.

The Pembroke Estate: Jewel of the Cove

One of the era’s crown jewels was the Pembroke Estate, built in 1916 for Captain Joseph R. DeLamar. Designed by renowned architect C.P.H. Gilbert in French neoclassical style, the 82-room, 46-acre estate featured a palm court, bathhouse, indoor tennis court, stained-glass by Tiffany, and even an elevator to a tea pavilion in its water tower. Though demolished in the late 1990s, its iconic ten-story belvedere tower still stands—now within the gated Legend Yacht & Beach Club community.

Remaining Mansions: Living History

Several Gold Coast mansions endure as vibrant landmarks:

  • The Manor (1910, Charles A. Platt), now the Glen Cove Mansion Hotel & Conference Center
  • The Braes (1912), a 40,000 sq ft Jacobean estate now home to Webb Institute
  • Bogheid (1938), designed in French manor style by Delano & Aldrich for J.P. Morgan’s daughter
  • Welwyn Preserve, once Harold Pratt’s estate, now a serene 200-acre park with the Holocaust Memorial Center

Modern Revival: Garvies Point & Promenade

Fast-forward to 2025: Glen Cove’s waterfront is experiencing a renaissance. Garvies Point—formerly industrial land—is now a 56-acre mixed-use transformation featuring over 1,100 LEED-certified residences, 75,000 sq ft of shops/restaurants, parkland, marinas, waterfront promenades, and a playground highlight. The “Green at Garvies Point” opened in 2023, providing 55 affordable housing units that help revitalize the area. Public access to nearly 20 acres of restored shoreline park space is now a reality.
